Vicarious Vision, one of the studios from the stable of Activision Blizzard now known as Blizzard Albany, apparently worked for a few months on the prototype of a new game starring Donkey Kong, codenamed “Freedom”, which unfortunately never saw the light of day. This at least according to the sources of the amateur portal DK Vine, also corroborated by DidYouKnowGaming.
According to these rumors, the title in question was a 3D platformer, with work started with a small group of developers in 2015therefore before the launch of Nintendo Switch, only to be discontinued approximately six months later.
The details on the alleged Donkey Kong from Vicarious Visions
As explained in the clip above, “Freedom” was set in large explorable island, with gameplay focused on character movement and fluidity. Donkey Kong could have climbed walls and swung on vines. One of the mechanics designed by the Vicarious Vision team concerned the possibility of sliding on horizontally placed and inclined vines using makeshift shoes made from banana peels. According to DK Vine it would also have been possible to play as Pauline in the game and the story revolved around an ecological disaster.
Again according to information shared by DK Vine, the prototype created by the team featured a jungle-infested cityscape. Players had to start from the lower part of the city and then climb higher and higher using vines, running on walls and bouncing off objects.
According to DK Vine, the project is finally over it was shelved in the spring of 2016as Activision Blizzard was reselling its strategy, with the intention of decreasing its efforts in single-player games.
Clearly, take all this information with a pinch of salt, as it is not possible to verify its veracity in any way.
